The bottlenose dolphins of Rangiroa
For seventeen years, a handful of volunteers has been studying and protecting the bottlenose dolphin community of the Tiputa pass. Knowledge, conservation, awareness.
Understanding in order to protect
These dolphins live in the same place all year round, metres away from heavy tourist traffic. Knowing them individually is the only way to measure what that pressure does to them.
Scientific monitoring
Photo-identification of every individual in the Tiputa community: who is here, who is missing, who has calved. Fifteen years of continuous data.
Conservation
Documenting how approach activities affect the animals' behaviour, and changing practices together with those who carry them out.
Awareness
Schools, divers, visitors, institutions: explaining what a non-intrusive observation looks like, and why it matters.
Seventeen years in the same place
The association has followed the same dolphin community since 2009, individual by individual. That continuity is what makes it possible to say what changes, and what is lost.
